The Longmont Police K-9 Association hopes to raise $13,000 to purchase five bulletproof vests for the Longmont Police Department's newest K9s — Bear, Delta, Pipo, Snap and Zombi. Sergeant Billy Sawyer, who oversees the Longmont Police Department's K-9 unit, which includes one German Shepherd, two Belgian Malinois and two German Shepherd and Belgian Malinois mixes, said the dogs, currently, do not wear bulletproof vests due to their high costs. By delegating fundraising duties to Washington state-based nonprofit Keeping K-9s in Kevlar, the Longmont Police K-9 Association will save $600 per vest, thus reducing their price to $2,600 each.
